Grant acknowledged that racial prejudice came close to causing him to commit suicide. He disclosed his struggles with mental illness and claimed that while on the balcony of his hotel room, he had suicide thoughts.

Grant recalled his experiences growing up in a tiny town in New South Wales and coming into contact with racism as a young child in the 1960s. When he was just five years old, he experienced an identity crisis.

The principal summoned the 15-year-old Australian journalist and his friends into a room and told them to quit school because they would “amount to nothing.”
