Scotland Fans drink Boston’s Taprooms dry

Boston knew Scotland fans were coming. What the city did not know was just how thirsty they would be.

Sam Adams confirmed that its Boston Taproom completely ran out of Samuel Adams Boston Lager over the weekend after the Tartan Army drank it dry.

From Thursday to Sunday, the brewery said Scottish fans consumed four times the amount of beer it normally sells during a typical four-day holiday stretch like the Fourth of July.

“We’ve never seen anything like it,” said Billy DeCain of the Sam Adams Boston Taproom, which had to schedule an emergency delivery on Saturday morning just to keep up with demand.

Hennessy’s Bar near City Hall said the Tartan Army drank all of the beer they had on hand for the weekend, after tripling the revenue they normally make on St Patrick’s Day.

Federal Wine & Spirits in the Financial District ran out of every drop of Beer it had stocked, while a refrigerator at the store broke down from the heat caused by the constant stream of customers opening and closing the front door.

Scottish fan Dave Orr summed up the scene at one Boston pub bluntly, “The White Bull Tavern, there was no beer.

“The Scottish fans just drank the place dry and all they had was Bud Light.”

The thirst started before fans had even landed. Scottish supporters reportedly drank an entire flight’s beer supply dry en route to Boston ahead of their World Cup opener against Haiti.

It is no surprise, given the occasion. Scotland is competing in their first World Cup since 1998.

Following the win, around 5,000 Scottish supporters marched from Evans Way Park to Fenway Park for a Red Sox.

Tennent’s, Scotland’s favourite lager, has reportedly been working flat out to keep up with demand back home, it estimates that Scotland’s three group matches are the equivalent of three Hogmanay celebrations crammed into just ten days.

Scotland will face Morocco next in Boston on June 19, with their final group game against Brazil to follow in Miami. Boston’s bars have been warned. The Tartan Army is not done yet.
