NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau has provided an update on high-level discussions between CAF President Patrice Motsepe and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, held in Nairobi.
According to Gusau, the meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between Nigeria and the CAF, with key discussions centered on Nigeria’s return to hosting major football events.
Gusau also confirmed that President Tinubu approved plans for Nigeria to host the 2026 CAF Annual General Assembly and the CAF Awards, marking a significant step in the country’s bid to re-establish itself as a major hub for African football events.
“I can say it’s a great moment and a great thing for us especially in the footballing system of Nigeria,” Gusau said.
“The CAF President had a meeting with our President and we are happy to see that the President gave us the audience that we deserve and we discussed a lot of areas of collaboration between Nigeria and the football body of the continent.”

He added that discussions also included plans to return major tournaments to Nigeria at both continental and global levels.

“The CAF President also spoke about bringing the Annual General Assembly of CAF to Nigeria which will basically take place in Lagos as well as the CAF Awards,” Gusau said.
“I believe this will be the start as we step up our game to ensure that in a couple of years we return to hosting major tournaments, even at FIFA level.”
Nigeria last hosted the CAF Awards in January 2017 in Abuja for the 2016 edition of the ceremony.
The country has hosted the awards five times in total. The last CAF General Assembly held in Nigeria took place in February 2009, when Lagos hosted the continental congress.
