Brazil were out. Erling Haaland had scored twice. Norway were through. And Neymar, the greatest Brazilian footballer of his generation, stood on the pitch in tears, overcome by the full weight of what had just happened.
Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16 was their worst World Cup exit since 1990.
The loss extended Brazil’s painful run to seven consecutive World Cup knockout defeats against European opposition.
And it brought the curtain down on Neymar’s international career in the most heartbreaking way possible.

Despite coming off the bench and scoring a stoppage-time penalty, becoming the first Brazilian to reach 80 international goals, Neymar addressed the media with quiet finality in the mixed zone after the match.
“It is all over,” he said.
Sixteen years. 130 appearances. 80 goals. 59 assists. The 2013 Confederations Cup. Olympic gold in 2016. And a World Cup trophy that never came.
By the time Neymar reached the dressing room, his father was already on Instagram.
Neymar Senior posted a lengthy, emotional statement in Portuguese directed entirely at his son, begging him not to walk away from football altogether.

The post went viral within hours, shared by millions of fans across Brazil and beyond who could not bear the thought of it being truly over.
“Oh, son. What a journey. What a beautiful path. Challenging. Often painful, but infinitely blessed,” Neymar Sr. wrote. “A decision made today does not define your entire story. A dream that hasn’t come true yet doesn’t mean it’s dead.”
He went further, speaking not as a manager or a football man, but as a father.
“I want to make a request to you as a father. Son, keep playing football. Rediscover the joy of having the ball at your feet. Smile again on the field. Today you are healthy. God has given you another chance to do what you’ve always loved.”

He closed with words that had nothing to do with trophies or titles.
“Don’t be afraid of tomorrow. Live for today. Train. Smile. Play football. Delight people once again. Do what God has placed in your hands since you were a child. And never forget that, even before the world admired you, you were always loved by God.”
Neymar has a contract with Santos until the end of 2026.
His club career, for now, continues. His international chapter is closed.
Brazil’s greatest goalscorer walked off the World Cup stage in tears.
His father watched from his phone, typed every word of that message, and hit send.
Sometimes the most important conversations in football happen not in press conference rooms or dugouts, but on Instagram, between a father and his son.
