Mathew Leckie Fires Australia Into Last 16: Australia defeated Denmark 1-0 to advance to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Australia placed second behind Group D champion France after Mathew Leckie’s lone goal in the 60th minute.
Denmark has been eliminated from the World Cup, and Australia’s next opponent will be the group’s victor, which includes Argentina, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico.
Mathew Leckie Fires Australia Into Last 16: For the first time since 2006, Australia advanced to the round of 16 in the World Cup thanks to Mathew Leckie’s outstanding solo finish.
No matter what happened in Tunisia and France’s other Group D encounter, Kasper Hjulmand’s team from Denmark knew they needed to win this one, so they got off to a fast start.
The Danes were able to force Australia back into their own third but were unable to put Matt Ryan to the test because of their last ball’s poor quality.
Their greatest opportunity came in the 19th minute when Harry Souttar nearly scored an own goal from a Joakim Maehle cross, forcing the Australian goalkeeper to make a save with his feet.
Both teams had a very sluggish second half with the ball. Australia didn’t begin to attack more effectively until the word that Tunisia had scored against France got through, and it only took a few minutes for Leckie to counter, spin away from Maehle, and put the ball past Kasper Schmeichel at the far post.
While the celebrations were going on, Denmark appeared shell-shocked, and after conceding, the team struggled to get past the Australian backline.
The winners of Group C which also includes Argentina, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico will go up against Australia next.
