Newsypeople- Daniil Medvedev, the fifth seed at the 2024 French Open, suffered a shock defeat in the fourth round, becoming the highest seed to exit the tournament. The Russian star was upset by Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who won the match in four sets with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.

The match was a closely contested affair, with Medvedev starting strongly and taking the first set. However, de Minaur fought back, leveling the match in the second set and then dominating the third and fourth sets to secure the victory.

Medvedev, who was seeking his first French Open title, struggled to find his rhythm throughout the match. He had 10 break point opportunities but could only convert 2 of them, while de Minaur was more clinical, converting 7 of his 14 break point chances.

Despite Medvedev’s superior head-to-head record against de Minaur, the Australian proved to be the better player on the day. De Minaur’s aggressive and relentless style of play proved too much for the Russian, who was unable to match his opponent’s intensity and consistency.

The defeat was a significant blow for Medvedev, who was considered one of the favorites to win the French Open this year. The fifth seed had been in good form leading up to the tournament, having won the Italian Open title in 2023.

De Minaur’s victory was a historic moment for Australian tennis, as he became the first Australian man to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open in 20 years, since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

In the quarterfinals, de Minaur will face either Alexander Zverev or Holger Rune, as he continues his quest for a maiden Grand Slam title.
