Police have not yet disclosed what may have led to the event, despite Chief Steve Drew’s statements to media that the shooting followed a “altercation” in a first-grade (ages six to seven) classroom and did not appear to be “accidental.”

How Did A Six-Year-Old Get A Gun?

Although police were still investigating the facts of the gunshot, Mayor Jones, who only took office five days ago, said he thought the phrase “altercation” was suitable and would use it.

He said, “We don’t have all the answers as to how a six-year-old might handle or have access to a handgun.”

This is a terrible day in our history, and I think it should cause the country considerable anxiety.

The police have also omitted to describe their interactions with the student’s parents. Virginia law forbids the prosecution of children as young as six as adults.

The child would also be too young to be held in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice if proven guilty.

The boy’s parental custody may be terminated by a judge, and he may then be placed under state care.

In order to give this young kid the best care possible, Chief Drew said on Saturday that police had “been in contact with our commonwealth’s attorney” (the local prosecutor).

Superintendent of the school system George Parker said on Saturday that the incident showed how important it is to “educate our children and ensure their safety.”

He continued, “We need the community’s help, continual support,” to make sure that children do not have access to firearms.

The state capital Richmond is situated about 70 miles (112 km) south of Newport News, a city with over 180,000 residents.
