Newsypeople – In a decisive move, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has inaugurated a seven-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry. This panel aims to investigate the recent violence, including killings and arson, that occurred at various local government headquarters.

The incidents took place on October 7, 2024, coinciding with the inauguration of newly elected local government officials. The governor emphasized that these events echo past violence seen in 2014, which marred the state’s political landscape.

The commission is chaired by Justice Ibiwengi Roseline Minakiri, with Mrs. Inyingi Brown serving as secretary and Uzor Ikenga as counsel. Other members include Felicia Nwoke, Professor Blessing Didia, Sir Samuel Egbe, and Venerable Alex Usifor. They have been tasked with a comprehensive investigation over the next month.

Their responsibilities include determining the causes of the violence, identifying those responsible, and assessing the damage inflicted on property and lives.

Governor Fubara articulated the urgency of this inquiry, stating that failure to address these issues could allow further violence to proliferate. He noted that this commission is crucial for restoring order and ensuring accountability among those who instigate violence in the state.

The governor’s remarks highlighted a troubling trend in Rivers State’s political history. He recalled how similar violence led to significant disruptions during previous electoral cycles. The recent attacks have raised alarms about political thuggery and the erosion of law and order in the region.

Fubara asserted that his administration would not tolerate such behavior and would work closely with law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators to justice.

The commission’s findings will not only address immediate concerns but also aim to establish long-term strategies to prevent future incidents. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of security responses and proposing policy reforms.
