The flight, FR8780, was traveling from Turin to Lamezia Terme. Giuseppe Stilo, a Ferrero employee from Filogaso, was on his way to visit his family in Calabria with his four-months pregnant wife, Federica Marella. The couple was seated in different rows at the back of the plane.
Giuseppe Stilo began to feel unwell shortly after the flight took off from Caselle airport in Turin around 11 am. The pilot was notified, and the decision was made to divert the plane back to Turin, a move that took less than an hour into the flight’s expected duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Two passengers on board, who were trained as doctors, stepped in to assist Stilo, beginning resuscitation efforts alongside the flight staff. This included chest compressions and the use of the on-board defibrillator.
Despite the efforts of the passengers and flight staff, the situation was dire. The plane landed in Turin 35 minutes after takeoff, and doctors rushed on board with adrenaline and another defibrillator. Upon landing in Turin, Stilo was pronounced dead. His wife, who had been sitting separately at the back of the plane, was informed of her husband’s death and taken to the nearby Ciriè hospital in a state of shock.
Stilo had recently started a new role at the Ferrero factory in Alba and was married in June of the previous year. He and his wife lived in Vezza d’Alba and were looking forward to becoming parents.
The flight was forced to return to Turin, where a doctor and a nurse boarded the plane. The rescue teams faced delays of more than ten minutes in accessing the airport gate, which could have potentially impacted the outcome.
