The couple announced their pregnancy on Instagram on April 13, 2024, revealing that they are expecting their baby in July. The announcement included a photo of the couple holding hands next to an ultrasound of their child, with Cherelle writing, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being  #BabyGrinerComingSoon #July2024”.

Brittney and Cherelle met at Baylor University and got married in June 2019. Brittney Griner was drafted to the WNBA in 2013 and has played for the Phoenix Mercury since. The couple’s journey to parenthood is intertwined with Brittney’s experiences in Russia.

In February 2022, Brittney was detained in Russia after customs agents found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She was tried on drug charges and sentenced to nine years at a Russian penal colony, which she began serving in November 2022. However, she was freed on December 8, 2022, after President Joe Biden negotiated her release in exchange for a Russian arms dealer.

Cherelle Griner spoke at a press conference the same day of Brittney’s release, expressing gratitude for the support that helped reunite their family. Brittney Griner returned to the basketball court in May 2023 and is set to release a memoir about her experiences in Russia titled “Coming Home” on May 7.
