“You’re not getting older, you’re getting better,” we’ve all heard. The truth is that we are all aging, and your body alters by losing muscle. According to Harvard Health Publishing, this can affect your strength, balance, and stamina to varying degrees. The good news is that you can make lifestyle changes to help you get back on track. We chatted with Mike Bohl, MD, MPH, ALM, Ro’s Director of Medical Content&Education and member of our Medical Expert Board, about how to boost stamina after 60.
Eat This, Not That!, says Dr. Bohl. “When you become older, your body goes through changes that can reduce stamina as part of the aging process and as a result of some chronic disorders (such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol). The body loses muscle mass and replaces some of it with fat, while blood arteries become less flexible (and potentially narrower), resulting in less effective blood flow and oxygen delivery.

To give yourself the best opportunity of having a healthy life into old age, keep challenging your body, and don’t give up on the things you enjoy doing.” So let’s get started with a few key enhancements. Read on to see the 6 daily habits to increase your stamina after 60.

1. Evaluate your diet, and eat healthier

Maintaining a good diet is essential for increasing your stamina. When it comes to eating a healthy diet, the final goal is usually to drop a few pounds. Dr. Bohl recommends eating a calorie deficit, limiting your intake of processed foods and carbohydrates, and focusing on plant-based foods.

Dr. Bohl clarifies, “However, if your main objective is to boost your stamina, it’s crucial to concentrate on eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of vitamins and nutrients. A carb-heavy snack before a taxing physical or mental exercise may also help you get through it because carbohydrates are the fuel your brain runs on and are also simple sources of energy for your muscles to use at the beginning of a workout.”

2. Get in cardio every single day

Adding cardiac training to your program is another way to enhance your stamina. “Cardio is fantastic for your heart and lungs, and it enhances blood flow and oxygen distribution throughout the body, making any physical exercise simpler to accomplish for longer periods of time,” Dr. Bohl explains.

3. Do some weightlifting

Step away from your usual routine and include a range of activities that will continually push you. “If you do the same workout at the same intensity for the same amount of time every day, you may maintain your functionality but not improve it. Choose workouts that you can gradually increase in difficulty day by day.

This can be weightlifting (gradually increase the weight or sets/reps), jogging (gradually increase the speed or distance), or playing a sport like tennis (start with a few games and gradually increase the length of time you play) “Dr. Bohl informs us.

4. Feed your mind on a consistent basis

Your physical capabilities are only one aspect of stamina. It also refers to your mental faculties. Dr. Bohl asserts: “Brain workouts that call for concentration and discipline will help you develop your mental endurance. This includes doing meditation or mindfulness techniques.”

5. Allow enough time for your body to rest

To maintain excellent stamina, your body requires adequate rest. “Make sure you get enough sleep each night (seven to eight hours for people over the age of 65, though every individual is different), and give yourself a rest between activities or days of extremely strenuous activities,” Dr. Bohl suggests.

6. Take caffeinated beverages and supplements to get a boost of energy

Last but not least, adding coffee or any other caffeinated beverage to your regimen is an easy way to raise your energy levels after age 60. “In addition to enhancing alertness, caffeine has also been found to increase endurance. Other supplements, such as ashwagandha, may also be associated with increased stamina, including “says Dr. Bohl.
