Dieting can be a huge victory for your general health, but it can be a long process. Everyone’s experience is unique. For some, it may take several weeks, while for others, it may take many months to observe a significant difference. No big achievement is achieved overnight, and we offer five helpful strategies for keeping motivated when trying to lose weight. Read on to discover the seamless ways to be motivated when dieting.

1. Set “process goals” for yourself.

We contacted Mike Bohl, MD, MPH, ALM, Ro’s Director of Medical Content & Education, and a member of our Medical Expert Board. Dr. Bohl provided us with some excellent advice. “First, define process goals for yourself—not simply end goals,” he suggests. When people go on a diet, they are often mainly concerned with the final result—how they will look and feel at the end. However, because getting there can take time, it’s crucial to set smaller goals along the way so you feel like you’re still accomplishing things and making progress.

You may check off a new goal every week (or even every day) if you establish objectives that are focused on what you’re doing rather than what the end outcome will be.”

Process goals include eating a nutritious lunch every day of the week, eating fewer snacks between meals for a few days, and scheduling exercise time five days a week. These, according to Dr. Bohl, are “easier-to-achieve goals” that can be completed in a short period of time. You’re dividing the overall time required to lose a certain number of pounds into small, beneficial behaviors.

2. Keep a journal to reflect on your progress.

Dr. Bohl advises journaling and tracking your improvement. It can be challenging to notice little changes, but by checking your journal approximately every two weeks, you can realize just how far you’ve actually gone and maintain your motivation.

Diet with a friend.

Another effective strategy to diet is to do so with a friend or perhaps a diet support group.

“Having a diet buddy not only keeps you motivated and makes you feel less alone in your journey,” Dr. Bohl says, “but your buddy may also be able to teach you things (e.g., a great new healthy recipe they learned) that you can include into your own routine.”

Don’t be so hard on yourself

It’s critical to understand that flexibility is acceptable. In fact, it’s essential for preventing burnout before you accomplish your main objective. Dr. Bohl clarifies, “Diets that are too difficult to maintain are one of the most frequent causes for giving up on them. Give yourself a cheat meal or a cheat day if you start to feel too restricted.

Don’t feel bad about it. It is much better to indulge in one day of straying to make yourself feel better and then get back on the diet the next day than to completely abandon the diet because you didn’t give yourself any leeway.”

When you diet, you’re not just enhancing your appearance; you’re also giving yourself health benefits. Many dieters just pay attention to what they see in the mirror, but Dr. Bohl says there are additional indicators of success you may look for.

Keep track of how your blood pressure and cholesterol have changed when you have your annual physical. It’s quite impressive to find that dieting has benefits beyond just weight loss.
