Late Thursday, Republican congressman Jim Hagedorn of Minnesota’s 1st district died.

According to his wife, Rep. Jim Hagedorn, a staunch Republican from southern Minnesota who followed in his father’s footsteps into Congress, died of kidney cancer.

At the time, he was 59 years old.

Jennifer Carnahan stated on Facebook on Friday that Hagedorn “passed away softly last night.”

In February 2019, two months after starting his first term and a few months after marrying Carnahan, the Minnesota Republican Party’s state chairperson at the time, Hagedorn was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer.

Hagedorn was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in February 2019 and had additional treatment, including immunotherapy, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

In July 2021, MPs announced that kidney cancer had returned.

Jennifer Carnahan, the former chairwoman of the Minnesota Republican Party, paid tribute to Hagedorn early Friday on social media:

He was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2019 and received treatment.

 

He overcame his cancer battle and was cancer-free in 2020 after having his advanced kidney removed.
