Newsypeople- Tom Curry has been named in England’s 36-man squad for their summer tour of Japan and New Zealand despite an injury-wrecked season.

The Sale flanker, who has played just 34 minutes since last year’s World Cup, recovered from a hip injury in time to make a brief appearance in Sale’s Premiership play-off semifinal defeat by Bath on June 1.

England coach Steve Borthwick has defended Curry’s selection, stating that he is in “fantastic condition” and that the medical teams from both Sale and England have been supportive of his inclusion.

Tom Curry’s inclusion is a significant boost to England’s squad, which also includes seven players from Premiership champions Northampton, including uncapped wing Ollie Sleightholme, the leading try-scorer in the Premiership this season.

Saracens hooker Jamie George will continue as captain, and the squad will face a Japan side coached by former England boss Eddie Jones in Tokyo on June 22 before taking on the All Blacks in two tests, in Dunedin and Auckland, on July 6 and 13.

Borthwick emphasized the challenges England will face, particularly in New Zealand, where they have historically struggled.

He noted that the team will need to be mentally strong and tactically smart to achieve success against the All Blacks, who came close to winning the World Cup.

The squad includes six uncapped players, including Harlequins pair Fin Baxter and Luke Northmore, Sale back-three players Joe Carpenter and Tom Roebuck, and Bristol hooker Gabriel Oghre.

The selection of Curry and other players reflects Borthwick’s determination to develop the squad and prepare for the next World Cup in 2027.
