Stephanie Frappart First Female To Referee At Men’s World Cup: On Thursday, Stephanie Frappart will make history as the first female official to oversee a World Cup match involving males.
In charge of an all-female refereeing crew for the Group E championship game between Germany and Costa Rica, Frappart has officiated in the men’s Champions League, Ligue 1, and World Cup qualifying. For the crucial match in Group E, Neuza Back and Karen Diaz Medina will support her.
Stephanie Frappart will be the first female official to officiate at a World Cup for men.
When Costa Rica plays Germany on Thursday, an all-female referee panel will oversee a men’s World Cup game for the first time.
As the fourth official for Mexico’s scoreless draw with Poland last Tuesday, Frappart became the first female official to work the competition.
Thursday’s Group E match at Al Bayt Stadium will feature Neuza Back of Brazil and Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico. As a helper, Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States has also been called up.
Before the competition, Frappart stated: “We are aware of the pressure. But I believe that we won’t alter. Be composed, and concentrated, and don’t think too much about the press or anything else; simply keep your attention on the playing surface.
The Frenchwoman, 38, expressed her belief that having female referees in Qatar “would make things happen” more widely.
“Having women referees in that country is a significant sign from FIFA and the authorities,” she continued.
Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan are additionally present in Qatar.
When the Netherlands defeated Latvia 2-0 in Amsterdam in March of last year, Frappart made history by becoming the first female official to oversee a men’s World Cup qualifier.
She presided over Juventus vs. Dynamo Kyiv in the men’s Champions League for the first time in December 2020.
Germany knows that only a victory over Costa Rica on Thursday night will give them a chance to advance to the round of 16.
