Senegal Wins To Leave Qatar Staring At Elimination With 3-1 Victory

Senegal Wins To Leave Qatar Staring At Elimination: Senegal earned their first World Cup points with a 3-1 victory over the tournament’s hosts Qatar, who now need a miracle to advance to the knockout round.

The AFCON champions scored first through Boulaye Dia in the 41st minute, and Famara Diedhiou doubled their lead shortly after the half. Mohammed Muntari’s spectacular header gave Qatar a chance to respond, but Bamba Dieng secured the win late on.

If the Netherlands defeat Ecuador or tie with them in the second Group A encounter later on Friday, Qatar will be eliminated. This will be the first time in tournament history that a host nation has been ousted after just two games.

Four minutes before halftime, Boulaye Dia took advantage of a defensive blunder by Boualem Khoukhi of Qatar to put the ball past Meshaal Barsham and give his country the lead. The Africa Cup of Nations champions had been by far the superior team in the opening session.

Aliou Cisse’s team then extended their lead three minutes after the restart. At the near post, Famara Diedhiou was the first to react and headed into Ismail Jakobs’ corner.
Twelve minutes from the end, substitute Mohammed Muntari headed home a cross from the right to give Qatar their first goal of the competition.

Bamba Dieng skillfully converted Iliman Ndiaye’s cut-back into the middle of the box to give Senegal the lead in the 84th minute.
