The Netherlands defeated Senegal 2-0 in their World Cup opener thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen, which helped the Oranje tie Ecuador for first place in Group A.
Gakpo leaped to meet a brilliantly weighted Frenkie de Jong cross and head into an open net, leaving Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy trapped in a no-land man’s as a lifeless second half appeared to be fizzling out.
De Jong made a mistake in the first half when he missed a fantastic opportunity to beat Mendy one-on-one, but his assist made up for it.

After the break, Senegal twice put rookie Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert to the test, but in the absence of injured star player Sadio Mane, they were unable to make a breakthrough.
Memphis Depay, a crucial striker for the Netherlands, was also absent, but in the second half, he unexpectedly made his first appearance since suffering an injury in September from the bench.
