1980 African Cup of Nations winner, Segun Odegbami has launched fresh criticism of the NFF, declaring that Nigerian football has “failed” and urging key figures to step aside.
Odegbami expressed concern that football stakeholders in the country have remained silent despite what he described as obvious decline.

“The only yardstick to measure the success or failure in football is if you win, and it’s a global thing.
“I think what Nigerians should do isn’t be arrogant and think everything is okay nothing will change when obviously to the whole world we have failed and we are still failing.
“The worst part isn’t to do anything about it but to think that we can just go on. That’s my feeling about it something needs to give. When something is wrong you fix it you don’t just let it be.
“They are making us look like all of us don’t know what is right or wrong that things are okay. In an advanced football culture, you saw what happened to Italy people resigned on their own because they’ve accepted that they have failed.
“We should have things like that, if they aren’t going to resign they shouldn’t come back.”

His remarks reflect growing frustration among many Nigerians who have called for sweeping changes within the NFF leadership.
Despite the mounting criticism, current NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau is reportedly set to contest re-election.
The next NFF elections are scheduled for September 26, 2026.
