Rafael Nadal Defeats Casper Ruud To Win ATP Finals Despite Exit Already Being Confirmed

Nadal And Ruud Turin 2022 Thursday: Rafael Nadal, the former world number one, had a challenging ATP final. He struggled, dropping both of his opening two matches to guarantee he wouldn’t advance to the knockout rounds.

Additionally, it meant that his match against the group’s champion, Casper Ruud, would end in a draw. But with a valiant victory and a display of class, Nadal gave the Turin audience something to cheer about.

On Thursday afternoon in Turin, Rafael Nadal defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets, 7-5 7-5, to win his final group stage match of the 2022 ATP Finals.
Despite playing some solid tennis, group leader Ruud forced Nadal—who entered the match already eliminated after a difficult start—to work for his points.

The Spaniard, however, used his knowledge to prevail in two close sets. After the other matches today and tomorrow are finished, Ruud will wait to know where he places and who he will face.
Afterward, Nadal told Amazon Prime Video, “I have been practicing well. “There simply aren’t likely enough matches for me to get where I need to be. After six challenging months, I lack confidence, but that is how things are. I acknowledge that things didn’t turn out the way I had hoped.”
At least I was able to conclude on a high note. I was successful in defeating a top player today “In the end, for me, personal gratification comes before any title. It is as it is. I won’t be able to return home and be content and at peace with myself if I don’t give every situation my best effort and attitude.”

Regarding his goals for the upcoming year, he said: “I can’t ask for more. The first half of 2022 has already been difficult. I can’t really complain at my age because I finished the year with two Grand Slams and a higher ranking. It means a lot to me to keep competing.
The only thing I need to do to be competitive right away in 2023 is to have the proper planning, do the necessary work, and then start the season with the appropriate vigor and attitude. Let’s try it. I’m looking forward to it.
The first set was close throughout, with both Nadal and Ruud holding their respective service games before Nadal prevented the Norwegian from forcing a tie-break.
Ruud made a series of nervous errors off both wings, giving Nadal triple set points. He then won the point with a forehand winner and won the game with a volley at the net.
Similarly, no player was able to even register a break point opportunity during the second set.
But once more, Nadal won it on the line, converting his second match point with a cross-court backhand winner to cap out his illustrious 2022 season.
