Maradona, who passed away in 2020, was celebrated for his leadership and scoring prowess during the tournament, including the controversial “Hand of God” goal and the “Goal of the Century” against England.

The trophy, which was initially presented at a ceremony in Paris in 1986, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, leading to various theories about its whereabouts. Some speculated it was lost during a poker game, sold to settle debts, or even melted down into gold pieces by local gangsters in 1989. However, these theories were deemed far-fetched, especially the latter, as the trophy was made of a gold-copper alloy.

The trophy was rediscovered in 2016 among other lots acquired from a private collection at an auction in Paris. It was thoroughly investigated and authenticated as Maradona’s Adidas Golden Ball trophy by Aguttes, the auction house handling the sale.

The auction is expected to attract significant interest due to the trophy’s uniqueness and Maradona’s legendary status in football. Bidders are required to make a deposit of 150,000 euros ($161,000) to participate in the auction, scheduled for June 6.
