A defining chapter in Nigerian women’s football has come to a close as Bankole Olowookere officially stepped down as head coach of Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos.

Following the conclusion of his tenure, the highly respected tactician delivered an emotional farewell, reflecting on a journey marked by historic achievements, resilience, and national pride.

Olowookere departs having firmly established Nigeria as a powerhouse at youth level, particularly after guiding the Flamingos to their historic podium finish in 2022.

Olowookere did not hold back in expressing what the role meant to him, describing his time with the Flamingos as deeply fulfilling.

At the heart of his legacy lies a groundbreaking moment, Nigeria’s bronze medal finish at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

“Leading the Flamingos to three FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup tournaments, including the unforgettable 2022 edition where we secured a bronze medal, remains a defining moment, not just for me, but for Nigerian football.”

“Making history as the first Nigerian coach to win a World Cup medal at this level underscores what is possible when dedication meets collective belief.”

That achievement not only elevated the Flamingos on the global stage but also cemented Olowookere’s place in Nigeria’s football history.

“I also wish to specially recognize the former NFF Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi, whose guidance and unwavering support have been pivotal throughout this journey.”

“I remain grateful as well to both the present and past Board Members of the NFF, whose commitment and dedication to the growth of Nigerian football provided a solid foundation for our successes.”

As he exits, Olowookere threw his full support behind his successor, Akeem Busari, who now takes over the Flamingos.
