Hwang Strike Sends South Korea Into World Cup Last 16: Hee-chan Hwang of Korea Republic celebrates after scoring the team’s second goal during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group H match between Korea Republic and Portugal at Education City Stadium on December 02, 2022.

With their advancement to the round of 16 already secured, Fernando Santos made six changes and rested several of his more seasoned players, including Bruno Fernandes. However, they still got off to a fast start, scoring five minutes in thanks to Ricardo Horta’s conversion of a low cross from Diogo Dalot.
Cho Gue-header Sung’s was well stopped by Diogo Costa, diving full stretch to his right to stop it, but South Korea did score just before the half-hour mark when Kim Young-Gwon acrobatically slipped home from close range.
In the second half, chances were fewer, although Costa made one outstanding reaction save from a thunderous Hwang In-Beom shot. However, as they looked for the objective they wanted to reach, there was a sense that Bento’s team needed to release the handbrake.
Time and South Korea’s chances seemed to be running out as they battled to keep the ball, but a quick Portugal counterattack resulted in Son Heung-Min feeding Hwang, who scored a thrilling victory, setting off wild celebrations at the Education City Stadium.
