Former Algerian Football President Djahid Zefizef Arrested

Djahid Zefizef, former president of the Algerian Football Federation, has been placed under temporary imprisonment following allegations of financial corruption.

Reports from the Algerian press indicate that his arrest is tied to a multi-billion Algerian dinar deficit linked to his time in office.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are expected to proceed with prosecution if sufficient evidence is established.

His detention represents a significant development in the case as the judicial process unfolds.

Zefizef led the federation from July 7, 2022 to July 16, 2023.

His tenure ended after he failed to secure a position on the executive committee of CAF.

Djahid Zefizef’s time in office was widely criticized for administrative and sporting shortcomings.

While Algeria’s U17 team won the Arab Championship in 2022, other national teams under his leadership underperformed.

The U20 and U23 teams failed to qualify for their respective AFCON tournaments, with the U23 exit also ending Algeria’s hopes of participating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Additionally, his administration faced backlash over governance issues.

Notably, the Algerian FA failed to register the women’s national team for the 2024 Olympic qualifiers; the error was attributed to an administrative oversight.

Overall, his leadership was characterized by critics as ineffective, citing both organizational missteps and poor competitive outcomes.
