The 2026 FIFA World Cup has given the internet two of its favourite characters.
One rules with an iron fist. The other lurks quietly in the shadows. And neither of them asked for the role.
Kylian Mbappe arrived at this World Cup already carrying the “Dictator” label, a viral meme that had been building for months before a single ball was kicked in North America.

Then the World Cup started, and Mbappe handed the internet its greatest gift yet.
During France’s 4-1 win over Norway, Mbappe was substituted in the 87th minute.
Instead of walking across the pitch to hand the captain’s armband directly to Aurelien Tchouameni himself, Mbappe handed it to English referee Michael Oliver and simply pointed toward Tchouameni, indicating that Oliver should deliver it for him.
He then calmly walked off the pitch and sat down.
The clip spread across social media within thirty minutes and attracted hundreds of thousands of interactions almost immediately.
Fans lost their minds.
“General Mbappe instructing the referee to give Tchouameni the captain’s armband,” one account wrote.
Another posted: “DIKTATOR MBAPPE BENERAN NYATA,” which translates loosely as “Dictator Mbappe is actually real.”

A French fan account put it most perfectly of all: “Le Dictateur Mobutu! He removed the armband, handed it to the referee and said, ‘Go give it to Tchouameni.’ He sent him like he was his assistant.”
TikTokers immediately turned the moment into anime edits, depicting Mbappe as the supreme commander of world football, with players, coaches and now match officials all operating under his authority.
One anime edit of the France vs Norway match reimagined Mbappe as the French Dictator and Haaland as the fallen Viking King, with the armband moment woven directly into the narrative.
The edit has accumulated millions of views.
Then there is Michael Olise

Where Mbappe is the loudmouth villain of the anime universe, Olise is the silent, terrifying character who appears from nowhere and destroys you before you even noticed he was there.
Fans have been editing Olise as a shadow figure, a quiet presence who lurks behind Mbappe and the rest of France’s attacking stars, only to emerge at crucial moments to produce something extraordinary.
His stats back it up completely. His personality makes it even funnier. Olise gives almost no interviews, says almost nothing in press conferences, and then goes out and tears teams apart.
He is the perfect anime side character who is secretly stronger than the main character, and the internet knows exactly what to do with that.
The tournament is not even at the quarterfinals yet. Whatever Mbappe and Olise do next, the internet will be ready.
