Arsenal FC have booked their place in the UEFA Champions League Final for the first time in 20 years after a tense 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium sealed a 2-1 aggregate triumph.
The decisive moment came just before halftime when Bukayo Saka reacted quickest to poke home a rebound in the 44th minute, sending the Gunners into only their second final in the competition’s history.
Arsenal Ends Two-Decade Wait at the Emirates
With the tie finely poised at 1-1 after the first leg, the second leg began cautiously, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances in a tense atmosphere.
But Arsenal struck at the perfect moment.
A flowing move involving Viktor Gyökeres and Leandro Trossard forced Jan Oblak into a save, only for Saka to pounce on the rebound and slot home the winner.
Atletico pushed for a response, with Declan Rice producing a crucial last-ditch tackle to deny Giuliano Simeone, while Gabriel Magalhães made a vital recovery challenge after the forward rounded David Raya.
Despite late pressure, Arsenal held firm to secure a famous victory.
Arteta Reacts: “We Made History Again”
Manager Mikel Arteta could not hide his emotions after the final whistle:
“It’s an incredible night, we made history again together, and I cannot be happier, prouder for everybody that’s involved in this football club.”
He added:
“The manner that we received outside the stadium was special and unique.”
“The atmosphere, our support has created the energy, the way he managed every ball with us, they made it special and unique, I never felt that in the stadium.”
Reflecting on the achievement, Arteta said:
“We knew how much it meant to everybody, we put everything, the boys did an incredible job and after 20 years and a second time in our history, we are back in the Champions League final.”
Saka Speaks: “It’s So Beautiful”
Match-winner Saka also shared his delight after the historic qualification:
“It’s so beautiful, you love to see what it means to us, what it means to the fans, we’re all so happy.”
On handling the pressure, he added:
“It’s easier said than done.”
“This game is a high-pressure game, it means a lot to both sides, and we managed to manage it well and take ourselves to the final, so we’re happy.”
The goal marked Saka’s 13th in the Champions League for Arsenal, placing him among the club’s all-time top scorers in the competition.
Atletico Madrid CRASH OUT of Champions League AGAIN
For Diego Simeone and his Atletico side, the dream of Champions League glory remains elusive.
Despite strong resistance and moments of promise, they lacked the clinical edge needed to break down Arsenal’s resolute defense.
Simeone refused to blame officiating decisions for the defeat, saying:
“I won’t focus on something simple like the Griezmann incident. It’s obvious, it was a foul. The referee said there was a foul by Marc [Pubill] on one of their players.”
He added:
“I won’t focus on that. It would be an excuse, and I don’t want to make excuses.”

“And we competed.”
“Unfortunately we haven’t won anything, but we’ve gotten to places it isn’t easy to get to.”
