Arne Slot Declares Leaving Liverpool Exactly Where It Belonged

The final words from Arne Slot as Liverpool manager may end up being remembered as much as his Premier League title triumph.

Just hours after Liverpool officially confirmed his shock dismissal, the Dutchman delivered a farewell message that has already ignited debate among supporters.

After guiding Liverpool to a historic 20th league title just 12 months ago, Slot’s reign ended in extraordinary fashion following a disastrous 2025-26 campaign that saw the Reds slump to fifth place, finish 25 points behind champions Arsenal and end the season without a single trophy.

Yet amid the disappointment, criticism and growing questions surrounding Liverpool’s decline, Slot made a bold declaration.

A statement many will see as proud while others may view as provocative.

And some Liverpool supporters may even interpret as a subtle challenge to the club’s owners.

The departing manager insisted he was leaving Liverpool “exactly where it belongs: amongst Europe’s elite.

The timing could hardly have been more controversial.

12 Months of Premier League Glory and Departure

Twelve months ago, Slot could do no wrong.

Handpicked to succeed legendary manager, Jürgen Klopp after his emotional departure in 2024, the Dutchman immediately delivered success.

Liverpool stormed to their 20th league title in his first season, lifting the trophy at Anfield with four games to spare.

Anfield erupted and supporters packed the streets of Liverpool.

The post-Klopp era appeared secure.

Slot was hailed as the perfect successor.

Fast forward one season and everything changed, but Instead of defending their crown, Liverpool imploded.

Backed an astonishing £446 million spending on new signings, including the blockbuster arrivals of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike for a combined £184 million, Liverpool regressed.

Injuries mounted, performances deteriorated and confidence evaporated.

The Reds managed just

– 14 league victories,

– scored only 63 goals and

 – conceded 53;

 – 4 (four) fewer than relegation-threatened Tottenham.

A humiliating fifth-place finish followed.

They ended five points behind Aston Villa in fourth.

– More astonishingly, they finished 25 points behind Arsenal.

For Liverpool’s hierarchy, enough was enough.

The Statement That Everyone Is Talking About

Despite the circumstances of his departure, Slot remained defiant.

In an emotional farewell letter published through the Liverpool Echo, he insisted the club remained among football’s elite institutions.

He wrote:

“I also leave knowing the club is exactly where it belongs: amongst Europe’s elite.”

He added:

“Securing Champions League football was an important responsibility and one that ensures Liverpool can continue competing at the highest level next season and beyond.”

Can a team finishing fifth, 25 points behind the champions and sacking its manager really claim to be exactly where it belongs?

Liverpool’s ownership group made clear that the decision was not personal; It was strategic.

In a lengthy statement accompanying Slot’s dismissal, the club praised his achievements while explaining why change had become necessary.

The statement read:

“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves, successful.

The club continued:

“As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise, which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.”

“Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction.”

And with those words, Slot’s Anfield chapter was over.

The Human Side of Slot’s Farewell

While football dominated much of his farewell message, Slot also reflected on some of the most emotional moments of his time at Liverpool.

One of those was the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a car accident last summer.

Slot wrote:

“That only weeks after celebrating together we would lose Diogo is indescribable.”

He continued:

“More than anything, I want to remember a team-mate, a friend and an incredible human being who touched the lives of thousands of you every time he wore this club’s famous crest.”

Paying tribute to Liverpool supporters, he added:

“In one of the most difficult moments this club has faced, the love, compassion and support shown by the Liverpool family was extraordinary.”

And further stated:

“As I leave this club, it would be remiss of me not to say that the way you honoured Diogo and stood together in his memory will stay with me forever.”

Arne Slot, Liverpool

Remembering the Triumph Before the Fall

Slot repeatedly returned to Liverpool’s title-winning campaign as one of the proudest moments of his career.

He wrote:

“That all of those emotions would culminate in a Premier League title after just 12 months was beyond special.”

Adding:

“It was not only a trophy, but a reward for the hard work, sacrifice and commitment shown by so many people throughout the club.”

He also praised supporters for their role in the celebrations.

“It was made even more meaningful because you got to enjoy it with us. Singing our songs, cheering the goals.”

“Seeing you come together in your hundreds of thousands on the streets of Liverpool for the title celebrations only reinforced that idea.”

Slot concluded:

“Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us and it will remain an important chapter in its history.”

Andoni Iraola, Liverpool

Iraola Leads as Slot’s Replacement

As Liverpool fans continue processing Slot’s departure, attention is already turning toward his likely successor.

Former Bournemouth manager, Andoni Iraola is expected to enter formal talks with the club this week.

The Spaniard is widely viewed as the leading candidate to take over at Anfield and restore Liverpool’s challenge for major honours.

His appointment would place immediate pressure on Liverpool’s decision-makers.

This is because by sacking a manager who delivered a league title within 12 months, expectations for the next coach have never been higher.

Could AC Milan Be Slot’s Next Destination?

Remarkably, Slot may not remain unemployed for long.

Reports suggest the Dutchman has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Massimiliano Allegri at AC Milan.

The Italian giants are searching for a new manager after another disappointing campaign that saw them finish fifth in Serie A despite leading the table as late as December.

If appointed, Slot could quickly find himself attempting another rebuilding project at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The Final Word That Will Haunt Liverpool

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Slot’s departure is not that he was sacked.

Managers are sacked every season, but, it is the way he chose to leave.

He wrote:

“I leave with complete confidence in what lies ahead.”

“The players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will endure.”

Finally, he ended with the words now dominating the conversation across Merseyside:

“When I first stood beneath that sign in the Anfield tunnel, I knew what this club demanded.”

“I leave knowing we never stopped striving for it.”

The next manager will now be tasked with proving if Arne Slot left the club “exactly where it belonged.
