Prince Harry Opens Up About Grief of Losing Parents, Urges Youth to Talk About Emotions

  • Prince Harry has opened up about his personal experiences with grief and bereavement following the death of his mother, Princess Diana.
  • He emphasized the importance of not suppressing emotions and instead acknowledging and celebrating the life of the departed, as avoiding discussions about loss can have detrimental effects on one’s well-being.
  • Prince Harry shared how he initially struggled to confront his grief, leading to a period of turmoil before seeking help, and urged children not to bottle up their feelings indefinitely.

Prince Harry, the 39-year-old Duke of Sussex, in a touching video, spoke about the pain of the death of his parent and encouraged kids and teenagers to express their feelings.

He turned up for Scotty’s Little Soldiers as a responsible global representative and told a small group of children like himself who had lost their mothers or fathers by airplane crashes his tragic memories of losing his mother, Princess Diana, at the age of twelve.

Furthermore, he made it clear that grief is a very heavy matter which has to be embraced rather than be pushed under the rug.

“That was so easy, as a kid, for me to think, you know, may be she wants me to feel like this, she wants me to be very miserable, to know that I miss her,” Harry was quoted as saying to Nikki Scott principal founder of the charity in his conversation. “But at the same time, you come to the realization that, no, they want me to be happy.”

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, added,

“The hardest thing, mostly for the kids, I feel is it, ‘I would rather not talk about it because I will be sad, but once I realize that if I do talk about it, I am commemorating her, then actually, things becomes easier’…in fact, to this, ‘I would never talk about it and it would be the best way of handling it,’ and which is not. It can be like that for a certain time…you cannot avoid it forever. It’s not a healthy way. It just makes you depressed.”

Prince Harry emphasized that the skill of dealing with the grief of the lost beloved ones will grow if one decides to speak about the matter.

He admitted that kids may sometimes not be able to confront their natural armor of the body and mind because of the resistance to opening up.

Yet he encouraged them to look for the strength to act like talking to the person who has gone is a must-have part of the constructive mechanism of making the tragedy heal.

The clip was recorded during my short stay in the UK in May and was released by Scotty’s Little Soldiers before the Armed Forces Day in order to focus on the children who had lost their parents in the UK’s military.

Newsypeople gathered online users’ responses to Prince Harry video. Below are a few of the remarks:

@Hot_Buttered_Popcorn: “We want privacy ! We want privacy ! Stop looking at us !”

@chrisfield2164: “This man has nothing else to focus on or merch off! Let the poor woman rest in peace and us at the same time!!”

@lovelybitofbugle219: “If his mother could see what harry did to his own people she would probably oof herself.
Remember how dedicated she was.”

@lovelybitofbugle219: “How disgusting to use your dead mum as a money making tool.”

@kfe56: “It’s time for a big-aged guy to abandon the stereotype “I lost my mother at an early age” and find something new. From the day Diana died, the whole world knew that Harry was only 12 years old. Yes, it must have been very traumatic for him with his brain, but we all get traumatized when we lose our mothers and people close to us, just like his brother William. Although it seems unsympathetic, isn’t it time for him to try to earn a crust of bread at the expense of someone else? It’s a shame to disturb a calm one…”

@davidsmith7104: “Shocked at the comments so far. Whatever you think about his recent behaviour, his pain must be unimaginable. Very brave to talk about these things so openly.”
