He started wrestling training at the age of 12 and judo training at the age of 15 after his family moved to Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, in 2001.

He began taking combat sambo training from his father once more when he was 17 years old. Despite his father’s insistence that he practice competing while donning a gi jacket, Nurmagomedov admits that the transition from wrestling to judo was difficult.

Abdulmanap served as the senior coach for the Republic of Dagestan’s national combat sambo squad in Makhachkala, Russia, where he taught a number of competitors in the sport.

Nurmagomedov frequently fought on the streets prior to focusing on mixed martial arts.

Along with his father, Khabib listed three additional athletes as his inspirations: Brazilian footballer Ronaldo, American boxer Mike Tyson, and American boxer Muhammad Ali.
