Fred Hickman Obituary: What Happened To Him? The sports media community suffered a great loss on Wednesday night when word spread that Fred Hickman had passed away at the age of 66.

A former nightly news anchor for the African-American cable news network Black News Channel, Fred Hickman was an American broadcaster.

Fred has also had positions at CNN, YES Network, TBS, and ESPN.

Fred, who was born and reared in Springfield, Illinois, joined CNN’s Sports Tonight as an initial co-host in 1980 after completing his studies at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1978.

Hickman earned the New York Sports Emmy Award in 2004 in addition to the CableACE Awards in 1989 and 1993.

Fred was a CableACE (Award for Cable Excellence) nominee for outstanding sports host every year from 1988 to 1993. Hickman won the award in 1989 and 1993.

In 1993, the US Television Fan Association gave Fred the “sexiest sportscaster” award. Hickman was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 after receiving a New York Sports Emmy Award in 2004.

The heartbreaking news of Hickman’s passing was revealed by Hickman’s church. In addition to anchoring at CNN, Fred has served as an anchor for the YES Network in New York, FOX Sports, and ESPN. The late anchor was remembered by a number of his former coworkers.

Fred became well-known for his work as a host on many local and cable programs. Fred was one of CNN’s original four sports anchors, along with Van Earl Wright, Nick Charles, and Jerome Jurenovich. Hickman and Charles rose to fame as co-hosts of “CNN Sports Tonight.”

Fred worked as an anchor for CNN and Turner networks, including TBS, for more than three decades. He was a sports anchor for ESPN from 2004 to 2008, working on programs like NBA Coast to Coast and Baseball Tonight as well as SportsCenter.

At the time of his passing, Hickman was the managing editor and an anchor for the Black News Channel.

Twitter has been awash with condolences to Hickman, a pioneer in sports journalism, from fans and former coworkers (with some fans noting that Charles passed away in 2011).

“@FHickmannews, I recently found out about Fred Hickman’s demise. Future African-American journalists owe Fred. When he joined CNN in its infancy, he paved the way for all of us.

On my birthday last Friday, he called, but I chose not to answer. Icon no longer exists. A fan tweeted, “Pray for his family.

Fred’s longtime buddy Harrison Golden also shared a heartfelt message about his loss on social media.

Likewise, everyone who heard the news of his passing expressed their deepest condolences, paid tribute to him on social media, and shared his priceless memories.

Fred Hickman and Nick Charles, anchors for CNN Sports, became regulars on many American television sets in the early 1980s.
