Lee approached the counter, pointed a gun at the newsagent’s head, and attempted to ransack the till. In response, the newsagent grabbed a computer monitor and tried to hit the robber over the head with it. The skirmish continued with the shopkeeper fighting back with a folding stool before Lee eventually fled outside, making his getaway on a bicycle while clutching the cash drawer. Lee also managed to steal an iPhone from the counter and a Samsung phone from the victim’s inside jacket pocket.

Following the incident, Lee was arrested on December 28, 2023, and later charged with robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an offence. He was found guilty and sentenced to six years in prison. The court also awarded the Sheriff’s Awards for Bravery to the victim and another member of the public who sought to intervene.

Detective Constable Seán Keogh of the Met Police’s Flying Squad emphasized the impact of such criminal activities on communities, stating that they spread terror and cause long-lasting harm and trauma. He hoped the sentence would reassure the community that the police are committed to identifying and removing offenders from society, demonstrating that those who consider similar actions have little to gain but a lot to lose.
