Music: The Johnny Depp’s New Album Is Receiving Savage Reviews From Netizens

Since its July 15 release, 18 has received mixed reviews from music reviewers. The majority of the songs are covered, such as “Time” by Dennis Wilson, “Let It Be Me” by the Everly Brothers, and “Caroline, No” by the Beach Boys. Two of Depp’s original compositions, “Sad Motherf*****’ Parade” and “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr,” are the only ones on the album.

It is evident that Depp drew inspiration from his experience of being blacklisted in Hollywood from lines like “Erased by the same world that made her a star/ Spun out of beauty, bound by its web.” This didn’t exactly win over the reviewers, many of whom thought Depp’s lyrics were “self-pitying” and “juvenile,” which is understandable.

The Guardian “A dreary display of tremendous self-pity,” was how one critic described the album. “18 is a difficult listen, frequently giving the sensation of Depp getting retribution,” editor Michael Hann remarked of the album. He went on:

“18 is an odd and incredibly uneven record. Even if Depp had never set foot inside a courtroom in his life, his record would still be odd and wildly unequal.

The Sydney Morning Herald

also gave a negative review to 18 The CD was also criticized for its “tainted” and “worthless” perspective on cancel society. Culture editor Warwick McFadyen wrote of 18: “It has nothing to say. Depp is a good musician who “can hold a note sufficiently to keep the melody distinctive. It enters and exits without touching the senses or the soul.

In their assessment of 18, American Songwriter was a little more understanding.

Beck was described as “excellent as always, his guitar being an elegiac statement of his energy and virtuosity” by author Lee Zimmerman. The ambition is great, but a schizophrenic quality permeates the overall endeavor, Zimmerman remarked of Depp’s presence.

Friendship: How Did Johnny Depp & Jeff Beck Meet?

Depp and Beck’s friendship supposedly dates back to 2017. The duo met inside Beck’s dressing room at one of his shows, per Daily Record. They started playing music together in 2019 before COVID hit.

In May, when Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at Beck’s Royal Albert Hall performance, Beck discussed his unexpected friendship with the Pirates of the Caribbean star. Depp “came banging on my dressing room door around five years ago, and we haven’t stopped laughing since,” he told the crowd.

Depp joined Beck on stage for the remainder of Beck’s U.K. tour after prevailing in his defamation lawsuit. The two released a cover of John Lennon’s “Isolation” in 2020 as their first jointly produced song. Beck and Depp’s first full-length record together is titled 18.

The renowned guitarist Beck described the meaning behind the album’s title on his website, saying, “When Johnny and I started performing together, it really kindled our youthful enthusiasm and imagination. We’d make jokes about feeling like we were 18 again, so that just naturally became the album’s title.

Lawsuit: Johnny Depp’s Recent Legal Battle With Amber Heard Explored

After six weeks of arduous court drama, Depp prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against Heard back in May. Depp filed a lawsuit against Heard after asserting that the Aquaman actor had permanently harmed his career by accusing him of abuse in a shocking opinion piece she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018.

The jury returned its decision on June 1. Depp was given $5 million in punitive penalties and $10 million in compensatory damages. Heard’s countersuit resulted in a $2 million settlement.

The actor, whose admirers eagerly flocked around him during the trial, was undoubtedly pleased to see 18 released at this time. The Hollywood Vampires, Depp’s band, have recently planned a summer 2019 European tour. He, therefore, has no intention of discontinuing his musical endeavors anytime soon, regardless of what the naysayers may think.
