McMahen, who was born in 1926, participated in 1948, 1955, and 1956 Melbourne Premiership teams. During his final two years as captain, he made a name for himself within the squad.
The Melbourne footballer began managing Rochester Football Club in the Bendigo Football League in 1957 after retiring as a player, and he remained in that position until 1961.
