Owen Hargreaves World Cup Advice To England Defenders: When asked if Harry Maguire would start for England against Iran at the World Cup in Qatar, Owen Hargreaves spoke candidly to Warner Bros. Discovery about his own World Cup experiences.
In 2006, according to Hargreaves, he was the target of jeers from England fans; now, the former Manchester United midfielder has urged Maguire to do the same.
When representing England at the World Cup, Harry Maguire, according to Owen Hargreaves, must block out “stuff off the pitch” and manage his own story.

Maguire has been in and out of the Manchester United lineup this season, but he still has a chance to start England’s World Cup opening against Iran on Monday.
John Stones, Eric Dier, and Harry Maguire might form a back three, with Kyle Walker and Ben White also vying for a starting position in Gareth Southgate’s squad.
But Hargreaves has pushed the Manchester United captain to put the criticism behind him and turn it into a positive because Maguire is one of Southgate’s most reliable players.
Harry has had a tremendously difficult couple of years, according to Hargreaves, who spoke to Warner Bros. Discovery. He had to persevere, and let me tell you, the challenges he faced were difficult.

“When you’re playing, it’s difficult to avoid thinking about all the criticism and hostility. He’s just under a different kind of scrutiny now, but I can tell he’s trying to play it off and not think about it. He always comes out and does the interviews after pretty much every [United] game I’ve covered.
“And like Marcus Rashford, Marcus had to shoulder a lot of the burden while the team was struggling. I believe Maguire had to absorb a lot of stuff, and I can tell that it was difficult for him. He has persevered though and is a member of the squad, and I have no doubt he will try to make things right. One of the most crucial things for him to know is that Gareth loves him.
“His training and the effort he puts into it are the only things he can control. Don’t read anything off the pitch; instead, concentrate on your craft and make a change. Having been in his shoes before, I can say with some pride that he persisted. I understand what it’s like to receive criticism and jeers, and I can imagine how much tougher it must be for his family.
“His closest friends and family are monitoring him because they can see the pain he is going through. He only needs to change that and transform a bad situation into a good one. Who will be laughing at the end if he leads England to victory and they grab the trophy?
Despite becoming one of England’s breakout performers of the tournament, Hargreaves described his own experience of being jeered during the 2006 World Cup.
The current BT Sport analyst and former player for Bayern Munich and United said Maguire needs to learn to tune out the noise and alter the narrative.
“You simply need to drown out the noise. I received criticism for even making the World Cup 2006 squad. I entered the game and was booed by England supporters. In the gathering, my brother was among the irate individuals, said Hargreaves.
“But in the end, I went away to play football at the age of 16. That was my goal; there were many times when I felt like everything was working against me, but in the end, it was my effort, intensity, and rate of work that brought me there.
“What matters is what I put into the game. And I have power over that story. if I perform well. He needs to understand that he controls the story and that if he plays extremely well, the talk will be entirely different. Marcus and Harry’s shoes are the ones that I have worn.
“I adore it when the boys flip it; it’s a lovely thing. I’ll tell you what, it’s a fantastic feeling to leave there and have altered people’s perceptions, so I’m pushing for both of them to play well.
