Summer Dashe has POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, two chronic disorders (EDS).
EDS is a hereditary condition that results in excessively supple tissues and joints, whereas POTS prevents the proper operation of the autonomic nervous system. Every time the body moves from lying down to sitting or standing, something goes wrong.
For either condition, there is no treatment. At age 26, Summer first experienced the symptoms, which included impaired vision, memory issues, difficulty controlling her body’s temperature, tremors, lightheadedness, persistent nausea, migraines, white spots on her skin, shortness of breath, exhaustion, and more.
She was first concerned that she wouldn’t be considered hireable if people in the profession found out. She eventually became more resilient, though, and adopted the mantra “I’m not going to die, so I have to find a way to live.”
Shortly after leaving ABC’s WATE, Summer received a request to serve as the anchor of a regular medical program. She was happy to continue appearing on television and speaking about a subject that was so dear to her.
She is a passionate supporter of POTS and other chronic ailments; as a result of her work, she was nominated for a regional Emmy and received wide exposure.
According to Summer, she decided to make disability advocacy her life’s work and that would pursue journalism as her career.
