Maria Juarez, the mother of Shaylee Mejia, has strongly disputed the police’s claim that her daughter’s death was due to falling down stairs at a party, insisting instead that Shaylee’s fatal injuries were the result of a brutal attack at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. The incident, captured on video, shows Shaylee being assaulted in a bathroom, with her head hitting a stall before she collapsed. This incident occurred on March 5, and Shaylee passed away on March 15, never regaining consciousness after being rushed to the hospital.
Juarez and her attorney, Luis Carrillo, have stated that they believe Shaylee’s death was a direct consequence of the injuries sustained during the school fight. They argue that the police’s narrative, which suggests Shaylee’s death was due to falling down stairs, is incorrect. The police reported responding to an incident on March 9 where a person fell down a flight of stairs, but Juarez and Carrillo maintain that Shaylee fainted due to the earlier fight and that there were no stairs involved.
Shaylee, a 16-year-old, had been attacked in a bathroom at Manual Arts High School just days before the incident at the party. Despite complaining about headaches, she continued attending school before the party on the following Saturday. Juarez has expressed her concern about the school’s failure to address the bullying her daughter faced, stating that her daughter had been returning home with bruises for months, which she believed were from other fights.
Juarez, a single mother of two and the family’s sole provider, has claimed that her daughter was being bullied for months, and despite her efforts to report these incidents to school officials and campus police, no action was taken. She has also mentioned that her daughter was targeted by bullies, and several attacks were captured on camera.
The principal of Manual Arts High School, Alejandro Macias, has expressed his condolences for the tragic loss, acknowledging that the incident took place outside of school hours and off campus. Despite this, he has assured that the school community’s thoughts remain with those affected by Shaylee’s death.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with the funeral costs for Shaylee’s family, with the goal of raising funds to help her mother with the expenses. The community’s support is crucial as they mourn the tragic loss of Shaylee Mejia, a young girl whose life was cut short by bullying and the subsequent injuries she sustained.
