Diaz, now 40 years old, last stepped into the cage for a fight against Robbie Lawler in 2021, which resulted in a defeat. Prior to this, he had taken a six-year hiatus from the sport due to various reasons, including an 18-month suspension for testing positive for marijuana following his fight against Anderson Silva in 2015. The welterweight bout with Luque will be Diaz’s first fight since his loss to Lawler, and it marks a significant return for the veteran fighter.
Diaz boasts a professional record of 26 wins in 38 bouts throughout his 23-year career. However, his last victory came against BJ Penn in 2011. Since then, he has suffered three defeats and one no contest, which was the result of his bout against Anderson Silva in 2015, which was deemed inconclusive after both fighters tested positive for banned substances.
The Diaz brothers, Nick and Nate, are known for their rebellious personalities and enduring careers, and they have amassed a dedicated fanbase. Nick Diaz, who was once a UFC title challenger against Georges St-Pierre in 2013, has been a prominent figure in the MMA world for many years.
Before agreeing to the fight against Luque, Diaz had reportedly been eager to return to the octagon earlier, targeting high-profile opponents such as UFC legend Georges St. Pierre, Colby Covington, Michael “Venom” Page, and Kevin Holland. However, he ultimately decided to face Luque, who has been a consistent force at welterweight despite losing three of his past four fights.
The return of Nick Diaz is significant for the UFC, as he is one of the most popular fighters in the sport’s history. His comeback fight against Luque is expected to generate significant interest and attention from fans and media alike.
