This decision marks a significant shift in the league’s stance on VAR, which has faced mounting pressure to be revised due to its perceived impact on the game’s spirit and fan experience.
Wolves had formally proposed a resolution to abolish VAR in May, citing concerns about the financial implications and the impact on the game’s spirit.
However, the proposal failed to garner sufficient support, with the majority of clubs opting to keep the technology in place. The league has acknowledged the need for improvements to VAR, particularly in terms of reducing interruptions and enhancing the supporter experience.

To address these concerns, the Premier League has announced plans to implement semi-automated offside technology and in-game VAR announcements. The latter will involve referees explaining their post-VAR decisions to spectators within the stadiums, a practice that was employed during the 2023 women’s World Cup.
These changes aim to improve the overall efficiency and transparency of VAR, making it a more effective tool for enhancing the accuracy of refereeing decisions.
Despite the controversy surrounding VAR, the technology has been credited with correcting 107 officiating mistakes during the 2023-24 season. However, it has also recorded 31 errors in Key Match Incidents, highlighting the need for continued refinement and improvement.
The Premier League’s decision to keep VAR reflects the league’s commitment to using technology to enhance the game, while also addressing the concerns of its member clubs.
The league has emphasized the importance of balancing the need for accurate refereeing decisions with the need to maintain the spirit and excitement of the game.
By implementing improvements to VAR, the Premier League aims to strike a balance between these competing interests and ensure that the technology continues to serve the best interests of the game and its fans.
