Wilkie’s journey to greatness began with his representation of Britain in international competitions, notably against Nikolai Pankin, the Russian 200-meter breaststroke world record holder. He broke the British record for the 200-meter breaststroke in an international match against Denmark in July 1970, a feat that set the stage for his future successes.

Scottish former competitive swimmer David Andrew Wilkie MBE has died at the age of 70. Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka on March 8, 1954, to Scottish parents he went to live with his family at a young age.COL Wilkie began swimming when he was introduced to it by swimming every Sunday at the open-air Colombo Swimming Club where his family were constant visitors. He was eleven years old when he left for Scotland to attend Daniel Stewart’s College in Edinburgh; while there, he joined the Warrender Baths Club and started serious training under the guidance of Frank Thomas who greatly influenced him toward becoming a world-class swimmer.

Among many other things accomplished during his swimming career, Wilkie won the gold medal for 200 meters breaststroke in the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal thereby setting a new world record time of 2:15:11 stopping Americans from sweeping men’s swimming event gold medals, he also got silver medalist position with time 1:03:43 for 100-meter breaststroke which stood unbeaten for six years. David Wilkie won three US National AAU titles while studying marine biology on scholarship at the University of Miami, as well as three NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships; being a four-time All American he was honored by being inducted into their Sports Hall Fame back in 1987. Over the next few years after that, he won multiple gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and World Championships thus making him known as swimming’s breaststroker of all time.

Wilkie’s career peak came during the 1976 Montreal Olympics where after losing the 100m breaststroke race to American John Hencken, he smashed the 200m breaststroke world record by more than three seconds finishing at 2:15.11 hence becoming the first British man to win an Olympic gold in swimming since 1908 before retiring from competitive swimming aged 22 right after his triumph.

Apart from Olympic gold, David also won a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Games over 200m breaststroke and set five more world records throughout his career. He was known for wearing a swim cap plus goggles in major competitions as the initial swimmer among others and also introduced a new skill called the ‘wave’ technique which became standard in all breaststroke styles.

Wilkie got an MBE award in 1977 and in 1975 he was voted British Sports Personality of the Year. He has been honored by the International Swimming Hall of Fame which he got after retiring from swimming alongside Scottish Sports Hall of Fame induction. In addition to swimming, David Wilkie built successful businesses like a healthcare company co-founder/a pet food company co-founder.

Unfortunately, this great man passed away on May 22, 2024, dying of cancer at the age of 70 and is survived by his wife Helen together with their two children Natasha and Adam who said about him that “ my dad achieved a lot in life and was truly amazing father/husband”.
