Romania are into the knockout stages of the Euros for the first time in 24 years thanks to this memorable result. Edward Iordanescu’s tenacious side responded to his pre-match challenge to make history with a combative display.

Slovakia have reached the last 16 of a major tournament for the third time, having reached the last 16 in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2016. Knowing that a draw would guarantee passage for both teams, there were hints that they might settle for a draw, but the match turned out to be anything but that.

It was a quick start for Romania, and Andrei Ratiu’s stinging strike forced a good save from Martin Dubravka. Slovakia were close through Lukas Haraslin’s free-kick before Duda’s header gave them the lead.

Marin equalized from the spot after David Hancko foul on Ianis Hagi was deemed a spot-kick by the video assistant referee. A heavy storm added to the tense atmosphere in the second half, but neither side could find a winner.

Ultimately, both teams were delighted to reach the knockout stage, with Romania claiming the top spot in the group and Slovakia claiming the third spot. Two underdogs secured their place in the last 16 after a memorable night of action.
