Bruno Onyemaechi: We will qualify for the World Cup

Super Eagles defender, Bruno Onyemaechi has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Brila Media, Onyemaechi stressed the importance of Saturday’s clash against Rwanda, stressing focus and commitment from the team.

He also praised head coach Eric Chelle for his tactical clarity and positive approach.

“I am happy to be here, it’s good whatever the Lord has given us today. The match we have on Saturday is very important, so we need to start preparing well and be ready for the game. We are hoping for a good result,” Onyemaechi said.

On the target for the game, he added:

“All we want to do is win. We don’t even care if we play good or bad; we just have to get the three points.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s last game in Uyo, which ended in a defeat, Onyemaechi explained the difference this time around.

“The mentality we had that day was a little bit different because we had already qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, so a lot of players were relaxed. But this time, we need to win and that’s the most important thing.”

On head coach Eric Chelle, Onyemaechi was full of praise:

“He is a good coach. His vision and tactics are clear. If you can’t understand it, then it’s your problem because it’s straightforward. You need to adapt quickly. I am really happy to work with him, and I hope to have many more years under him.”

Speaking on Nigeria’s qualification chances, Onyemaechi remained optimistic.

“Right now, the most important thing is to get the three points on Saturday. We need to focus more on ourselves and not on the opponent. That is the key for us. I believe we are going to qualify.”

Jokingly, he added that he would be delighted to score his first-ever goal for Nigeria.

“If I score or assist, I will dedicate it to my dad because he is no longer here; he is up there watching me. He used to tell me stories about how Nigeria won trophies in the 90s, so it will be my joy to dedicate it to him.”
