AFCON 2025: NFF Vows Best Super Eagles Squad Selection

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi confirming close collaboration between the federation and its technical department to select the strongest possible Super Eagles squad.

Speaking on the ongoing preparations, Dr. Sanusi emphasized that the provisional squad recently released by head coach Eric Chelle is only a starting point.

He added that the NFF, working hand-in-hand with the technical committee and technical department, will ensure thorough scrutiny before finalizing the team.

“We usually work hand in hand with the technical team, the technical committee, and the technical department to make sure that we prepare the team very well,” Dr. Sanusi said.

“The first aspect of the preparation is the invitation of players to come. The coach has invited a consortium of players from which he is going to select 28 players that will represent Nigeria at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.”

The NFF is under strict CAF regulations to submit the final 28-man squad at least 10 days before the tournament kicks off, with a $10,000 fine applicable for any delay.

The expanded 28-player squad format gives teams flexibility in selection, especially with concerns over player fitness and form in the European leagues during the mid-season tournament.

Nigeria has been drawn with Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, with expectations for the Super Eagles to do better than their 2023 AFCON final spot.

The final squad is expected to be announced shortly before the start of AFCON 2025, as Nigeria aims to assemble a competitive team capable of challenging for the continental title in Morocco.
