Seven Scotland caps later, McGarvey played for Queen of the South and Clyde before going back to St. Mirren. He scored 174 goals in 499 games for the senior league. In a different period, he would have represented Scotland considerably more regularly.

McGarvey helped Celtic win three domestic cups and two league titles while he was a player for his hometown team.

In October 2022, the 66-year-old Celtic, St. Mirren, and Scotland player received a cancer diagnosis. His sons Scott and Sean had posted the information on social media.

His sons posted identical posts on Twitter stating that their father had been given a cancer diagnosis that day and that they were awaiting more details from the doctors.

As soon as the news spread on social media, supporters paid respects.

The Dubai Hoops Celtic Supporters Club tweeted that everyone connected to the CSC is sending their friend and club legend Frank McGarvey, who is battling illness, love, and prayers.

They added that they were all aware that he wouldn’t accept it kindly and that he would fight it like he did everything else. Frank, unfortunately, lost his battle with cancer.

Former Celtic, St. Mirren, and Scotland striker Frank McGarvey passed away after being given the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The former Scotland and Celtic striker passed away on January 1 after being given a cancer diagnosis in October.

During a pre-game appearance on the Parkhead pitch before a match against Hibernian in October, McGarvey disclosed his struggle with “sneaky” pancreatic cancer.

When McGarvey left the Hibs game at Celtic Park when the crowd was singing You’ll Never Walk Alone, he said it gave him the motivation to keep fighting.

A Glasgow boy’s football team named Whitacre Wolves uploaded pictures of Mcgarvey from their awards ceremony and said that during this difficult moment, their prayers are with Frank and his family. On their first awards ceremony of 2017, Frank was a last-minute stand-in due to a late call-out, and he got along great with the youngsters.

 

Frank Mcgarvey Career Achievements

Glasgow native Frank McGarvey signed on with St Mirren in 1975 and stayed for four years before moving for £270,000 to sign with Liverpool. The next year, in March 1980, he departed Merseyside without making a first-team appearance in order to join his hometown team Celtic. He was the winner of two league championships, a League Cup, and two Scottish Cups.

His final match for Celtic came in the 2-1 victory at Hampden Park over Dundee United in the 1985 Scottish Cup final. He again won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren in 1987, and then he finished his senior career with Queen of the South as a player/manager.

At Hampden Park in May 1979, McGarvey made his debut for Scotland as a late replacement in a Home International Championship game against Northern Ireland.
