What Happened To Sean Rooney?
Sean Rooney was killed in an attack in Lebanon, as was previously mentioned. On December 21, 2022, Private Sean Rooney died while participating in the nation’s UN peacekeeping operation.
He reportedly perished on December 14 when his armored vehicle caught fire.
The Irish soldier’s funeral took place in the Holy Family Church in Dundalk, County Louth, on December 22, 2022.
The casket was brought to Aiken Barracks in County Louth, where he had been stationed, following the funeral service. The funeral cortège then conducted the burial service in Newtowncunningham, County Donegal.
Soldiers from the 27 Infantry, with which Pte Sean Rooney served, transferred the casket from the hearse to a gun carriage. A lone bagpiper played as the procession left All Saints Catholic Church and headed to the cemetery.
As the coffin was lowered into the ground, a firing team from the 21st Infantry Battalion fired 21 bullets.
At the grave, Sean Rooney’s fiance Holly, parents Natasha and Paul, grandparents Eugene and Rachel, grandma Ann McCloskey, and other family members gathered to say their final farewells.
President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste Michael Martin, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, and Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General Seán Clancy were present.
The family of injured UN peacekeeper Shane Kearney was present at the ceremony as well.

Sean Rooney’s parents are Paul Rooney and Natasha McCloskey. His grandparents are Eugene and Rachel. Ann McClusky is also the grandmother of the late soldier.
Sean Rooney’s death has broken the hearts of his family and his close-knit community, according to Priest Fr Derek Ryan.
The trooper’s mother paid tribute to her son in a heartfelt eulogy.
She stated that no words could sufficiently express her love and pride for Sean.
Natasha, Sean’s mother, was 16 when he was born, and he gave her purpose and made her want to do more, the bereaved mother continued. When McCloskey told the congregation that “Sean Rooney is a National Hero,” the congregation applauded loudly.

The speech was finished by Sean Rooney’s girlfriend claiming their life together had been cut short. She did, however, consider herself fortunate to have known Sean and his devotion.
