- He tried to minimize the injury to his mother, who was waiting for him outside the gym, before going to the hospital.
Newsypeople- The American singer Jason Derulo has told a story of a terrible event that happened in 2013, when he broke his neck during practice for the world tour. Speaking on Paris Hilton’s podcast called “I Am Paris”, Derulo spoke about this close-to-death experience with great detail.
Derulo was training with an instructor to get ready for the tour. They were mainly doing endurance exercises. He said,
“Today we will concentrate on endurance so I want you to perform these back tucks one after another,”
Derulo remembered.
In the middle of one back tuck – a kind of backward flip – he slid and hit his head which led him breaking his C-2 vertebrae.
Derulo shared,
“The moment it occurred, I heard a loud snap and thought to myself, ‘Wow, this is it? Is this how everything ends?'” He began to worry immediately for his mother, who was sitting in the vehicle outside gymnasium and waiting on him. Derulo made an effort to lessen the severity of injury by saying, “I think I hurt myself a little bit,” to my mom before requesting that we should go hospital “just for checking it out.”
At the hospital, X-rays revealed the extent of the damage.
“Okay, I have some good news and a bit of bad news,” doctor said to Derulo. “The good part is you’ve got what we call a hangman’s fracture, it’s basically the same break that occurs when someone gets hung. And obviously, you are still alive. So that’s pretty positive.” The bad news is you’re gonna be out for seven months.”
The injury forced Derulo to cancel his tour, which he called
“the largest tour of my life up until now.” He felt shattered for not meeting the expectations of his fans, understanding that “people are saving their money which they worked hard for, and they desire to be involved in this event.”
In the seven months of healing period, Jason Derulo made sure to create a routine for himself. He walked in the gym every morning for 45 minutes and then spent hours at the studio.
He said,
“That’s when I wrote my most successful album, Talk Dirty. It’s because I created a routine. It became like a common thing in my life.” When I’m able to follow a routine, amazing things happen.”
Derulo’s strength and love for music, shown by his ability to recover from the almost deadly accident, are a powerful example. The experience changed his career and thinking. It proved that if you have correct attitude plus routine, then no matter how big the problem is – everyone can come back again.
