Although Franco’s son made the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back’s passing public, Dok made no mention of the circumstances surrounding it. According to NPR, the former Steelers running back passed away just two days before the 50th anniversary of the play that helped the team become the dominant force in the NFL.

The ceremony to retire Franco Harris’ No. 32 will take place at halftime of Pittsburgh’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, three days prior to that.

The football player set a then-record 158 yards rushing and scored a touchdown in Pittsburgh’s 16-6 victory against Minnesota in Super Bowl IX, winning him the game’s MVP award.

After Jim Brown and Walter Payton, the hall of fame joined Seattle and ran for just 170 yards in eight games before being released. He retired as the NFL’s third-leading rusher all-time.

On March 7, 1950, Franco Harris was born to parents Cad Harris and Gina Parenti Harris.

His father was a World War II veteran who was stationed in Italy at the time of the conflict. It was there that he met his mother, who later immigrated to the United States as a “war bride.”

With the help of two local businesses who founded “Franco’s Italian Army,” a nod to Harris’ heritage as the son of an Italian mother and an African-American father, the Italian-American community welcomed the football player with open arms.

After retiring from football, the player stayed in Pittsburgh and opened Super Bakery. In 1996, they teamed together to save Parks Sausage Company.

The football player got active in various causes while serving on the advisory board for Penn State’s Center for Food Innovation.
