At the University of Rochester, he played football and earned a letter. He started two seasons. Daboll graduated with a degree in economics.

Daboll was employed by the College of William & Mary in 1997 as a coach for restricted salary. He served as a graduate assistant at Michigan State University from 1998 to 1999.

In 2000, when head coach Bill Belichick was still a rookie, Daboll, then 24, became an assistant defensive coach with the New England Patriots. His career as an NFL coach began with this.

When Josh McDaniels was promoted to defensive assistant in 2002, Daboll, a Patriots personnel assistant, was promoted to wide receivers coach. After the 2006 season, he joined the Jets as their quarterbacks coach.
