Patricia’s family disowned her because she wed a black man. Mariah had little contact with her father after her parent’s divorce, while her mother worked multiple jobs to provide for the family.

Mariah excelled in the arts—such as music and literature—right from the start of her academic career. She started writing poetry and songs while she was a student at Harborfields High School.
