The incident began with a burglary call received at 1:14 pm, leading to a manhunt that concluded with Soto’s arrest at 1:35 pm. One survivor was stabbed in the face while trying to escape, and three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, with one later succumbing at a local hospital. Five other individuals were treated for injuries at local hospitals, with one still in serious condition.

The local police chief stated that investigators had not uncovered a clear motive for the violence, which occurred around 90 miles west of Chicago. Soto was described as being covered in blood and resisting arrest during his apprehension. The community has expressed shock and grief over the tragedy, with tributes paid to the victims, including the mailman, who was remembered as a “very good man” and “the kindest person.”

Soto’s address was in the same neighborhood where the stabbings and attacks occurred, and his court history includes minor traffic tickets and a criminal charge in 2022 for criminal damage to property, which was dismissed. Several vigils and counseling services were planned for the days following the attack to help people affected by the attacks.

The alleged attacker is in police custody and being interviewed, with a massive law enforcement presence throughout the neighborhood. The city announced counseling services for residents impacted by the attack, available at Flinn Middle School from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
