Some people use Governor’s attendance at weddings and burials to measure performance — Former Commissioner

Some people use Governor

A former Commissioner for Information in Plateau State, Yakubu Dati, has raised concerns over the pressure placed on state governors to attend social events such as weddings and burials at the expense of their official duties.

Speaking during a segment on Channels Television’s Sunrise on Saturday, Dati said the demands placed on governors to appear at private ceremonies often distract them from their core responsibilities and developmental mandates.

He noted that in some quarters, governors are judged not by the quality of projects they execute but by their presence at social gatherings.

“Some people use weddings and burials to assess governors’ performance rather than the impact of their policies or the delivery of infrastructure,” Dati said.

Despite these societal pressures, Dati acknowledged that some governors continue to prioritise the welfare of their people, delivering essential services and projects amid the prevailing economic hardship across the country.
