Scottish Champions Celtic suffer first defeat at Dundee in 37 years

Celtic suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat to Dundee on Sunday, October 19, their first loss at Dens Park in 37 years, as the Scottish champions’ title defence took another blow in a season already marred by frustration and fan unrest.

Brendan Rodgers’ side fell behind when Clark Robertson scored with a header in the first half, before defender Cameron Carter-Vickers compounded their misery with an own goal just before the break.

Celtic fans’ anger boiled over during the match, as they disrupted play by “throwing dozens of balls onto the pitch” in protest against the Parkhead board following what they see as a disastrous start to the season, including elimination from the Champions League qualifiers.

The defeat marked Celtic’s first league loss of the season and their first at Dundee since 1988, when Tommy Coyne scored the only goal of that game.

Booed off the pitch at full time, Celtic now sit five points behind surprise league leaders Hearts, who they face next weekend at Tynecastle. But before that, Rodgers’ men must regroup for a Europa League clash with Sturm Graz on Thursday.

The match began in chaos after the opening whistle, as Celtic fans bombarded the pitch with multi-coloured balls, forcing a delay while stewards cleared the field.

When play resumed, Kelechi Iheanacho went close, clipping the post with a quick strike. But in the 17th minute, Dundee struck first, Robertson rose unmarked to head home from a Cameron Congreve corner.

Celtic tried to respond, with Kieran Tierney and Yang Hyun-Jun both missing good chances. But things went from bad to worse in first-half stoppage time, when Congreve beat Liam Scales down the right and crossed for Joe Westley, whose touch deflected in off Carter-Vickers to double Dundee’s lead.

After the break, Reo Hatate fired just wide from the edge of the box, while Dundee substitute Ashley Hay nearly made it three with a header from close range.

Goalkeeper Jon McCracken produced two crucial saves to deny Iheanacho, and Celtic’s frustration peaked late on when Hatate’s shot struck what appeared to be Paul Digby’s arm in the box. Referee Matthew MacDermid initially pointed to the spot, but after a VAR review, he overturned the decision, leaving Celtic furious and fans jeering once again.

The defeat piled more pressure on Rodgers and highlighted Celtic’s deepening struggles — on the pitch, in Europe, and increasingly, with their own supporters.
